ABSTRACT

This paper presents a comprehensive extension of NS2 (Network Simulator 2) to integrate a novel contention avoidance protocol specifically designed for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Contention issues in WSNs, arising from the simultaneous transmissions of multiple sensor nodes, can lead to performance degradation, collisions, and increased energy consumption. The proposed extension augments NS2 to support the simulation and evaluation of a contention avoidance protocol aimed at mitigating these challenges.

The contention avoidance protocol incorporates dynamic channel access mechanisms, leveraging techniques to minimize collisions and contention in WSNs. The extension to NS2 involves the integration of the new protocol into the simulator’s framework, enabling researchers and practitioners to assess its impact on network performance metrics such as throughput, latency, and energy efficiency.

The paper outlines the design and implementation details of the NS2 extension, emphasizing the modifications made to accommodate the contention avoidance protocol. Simulations are conducted to evaluate the protocol’s effectiveness in reducing contention-induced issues and enhancing the overall reliability and efficiency of wireless sensor networks.
